Realizing the importance of education, Dr. Thind paid 86 students’ college education. The students received their education in both the United States and India. Some chose to attain their Bachelor’s Degree. Others went on to receive Masters and Doctoral degrees in prestigious academic institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, California and USC.
Many of these students returned to India and became lawyers, doctors, and members of Parliament.
Today his Alma Mater, Khalsa College, honors Dr. Thind by offering a scholarship in his name to enable underprivileged students to obtain a college education.
Over 114 years ago, the leaders of the Singh Sabha Movement established Khalsa College, the premier institute of higher learning in India. They were inspired by the lofty ideals of the Gurus. Right from the beginning, highly intelligent, inspired and hard working personalities have remained associated with it.
Dr. Bhagat Singh Thind obtained his degree in Divinity from 1908 to 1912. While he was a student at Khalsa College in Amritsar, Punjab, Dr. Thind had already studied American history and its literature (Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman) and developed a keen interest in America and Americans and became inspired to travel to the United States to fulfill his destiny as a spiritual Teacher. In 1912, he left India and after a stay in Manila, landed in Seattle on July 4, 1913.
In Dr. Thind’s honor, Vivian Thind, his beloved wife and many of Dr. Thind’s disciples, established the Dr. Bhagat Singh Thind Scholarship after his Liberation on September 15, 1967. This scholarship is awarded annually to poor and deserving students on the basis of their achievements in various fields of academics. It was Dr. Thind’s wish that this fund be maintained for such a worthy cause. Each year, the Dr. Bhagat Singh Thind Spiritual Science Foundation, which was founded in his Divine Name, funds this scholarship.
